Organisation

IIU-EU has three divisions: (a) The School of Doctoral Studies, which hosts four Departments (Business Management and Economics, Engineering and Technology, Science and Social Science); (b) The IIU Press and Research Centre, which hosts four Research Units (one on each one of the four academic departments of the University), four Libraries and two Editorial Units (one for Periodical Publications publishing and one for Books and Monographs publishing); and, (c) The EUASC Committee (EU Analogue Standards Certification), which works through coordination of three Boards: The Quality Assurance Board, the Academic Methodology Certification Board and the Studies Programmes and Degrees Validation Board.

The majority of the University’s academic staff is located in the Brussels EU Parliament Building, but there are also campuses in the nearby Brussels EU Commission Building, where the EUASC Committee’s Boards meet, and in the Braine-L'Alleud Parc de L'Alliance, where the IIU Press and Research Centre (Brussels) facilities have been settled.

Collaboration

We cooperate extensively with other universities, colleges and research institutes around the world. By the means of over 110 collaboration agreements, the University is fully committed and engaged in joint research projects, research grants programmes, students’ exchange programmes and a wide variety of academic, scientific and technological collaboration activities with twelve other universities and research centres in the EU, and with eighteen other academic and scientific institutions elsewhere the European Union around the world.

Education

Programmes and courses included within validation or development cover traditional academic disciplines as well as specialised areas like nanotechnology, neuroscience and the performing arts. The presence of many cutting-edge research groups ensures teaching is linked to real world issues and advances. Education programmes for employees in the public and private sectors are another important component of the University’s activities.

The School of Doctoral Studies of the EU’s academic structure includes four Departments (Business Management and Economics, Engineering and Technology, Science and Social Science) which host 37 Disciplines, offering PhD studies on practically every main field of human knowledge.

PhD Studies

Through the EUASC Committee’s Degrees Validation Board, the University acts as examiners body in the process of studies programmes validation, and as degrees awarding body on most Higher Education three cycle programmes (Bachelor, Master and Doctorate). Additionally, a number of Vocational Education and Training programmes are also subjected to examination, validation and awarding process, on a parallel analogue process to that of Higher Education programmes’ validation process.

Outlook

The hallmarks of the IIU-EU are a democratic philosophy, critical thinking, concern for the global environment and ethnic and social diversity. Other values important to the University include humour, innovation and a humanist perspective.

History

The Isles International University receives its name from two sources, the original company register filed in Ireland, and the further Charter from Ministry of Education in the UK to act as a University, deriving into a British Isles born organization, now established elsewhere of the British Isles.

The IIU was first registered in Ireland in 1995 as a non-for-profit company, meant to act as studies validation and awarding body for a number of universities, schools and colleges throughout Asia and Africa, as well as for IIU partner institutions in Europe.

Over time, the organisation developed in Europe to become an internationally recognised self governed community of scholars, established in Belgium to work under the EU academic alignments on pursuing its mission’s accomplishment.

Mission

Today, the University’s personality is a synthesis of its British university tradition, the old company’s international relations framework, and the very strong academic and scientific structure formed by this community of internationally recognized scholars, scientist and education methodology specialists, settled in Belgium and working under the EU alignments and standards.
